THIS WEEK: our cover picture shows Lily Pons as she appeared at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House while singing the Mad Scene in Lucia di Lammermoor. This role Miss Pons repeats next Saturday afternoon, ten days after her twenty-fifth anniversary gala at the Metropolitan. We do homage to Miss Pons in a pictorial demonstration of her Metropolitan roles and extra-operatic activities. We also salute the memory of the first Metropolitan Lucia, Marcella Sembrich, who was likewise rewarded For her renowned career by a Metropolitan gala and whose memory is kept green at her Lake George studio.
