Description:
In the city of Cochin and within a 70 km (43 miles) radius, eight beautiful synagogues were vibrant centers of Jewish life. The roots of the Jewish community in southwestern India date back to around 1000 AD when the local ruler granted the Jews a nearly autonomic "merchant principality" north o Cochin. It lasted for 500 years, longer than any Jewish autonomy in the Diaspora. Immigration to Israel of Jews from the Cochin area started in the 1950s.
A wall-mounted 19th century Hanukka Lamp from Cochin graces the coin's obverse.
