Antique, Edwardian (late 19th century) gothic revival style, cast brass Church Altar Candlesticks Evangelist with reticulated bell shaped bases that have a motif showing the symbols of the 4 Evangelists and their names in Latin amongst fantastical foliage. Al parts of these holders carry decorative elements that blend with the base, including other leaf-like details as well as repeating geometric shapes typical of Romanesque and gothic style. Each one is made of 5 separately cast pieces which stack and screw together, making it fairly easy to clean and store in a small space. The heavy bases ring like a prayer bell when tapped! These candle holders were made in the 1890s, a time when gothic style was experiencing a revival, and purchased by a household in 1910 from whose estate these were sourced. They have been fully cleaned of wax and dirt, but left with their original patina (may be polished to shine if desired). In very good condition with patina commensurate with age, one beboche has a slight bend on one side which could be original (not quite flat like the other as shown in first photo) and the bottom edges of both have one slight dent (see detail photos). A handsome set of candlesticks with character and style!
