One of the most popular designs in all of American coinage, the American Silver Eagle combines beauty with silver bullion appeal and is widely considered one of the most beautiful American coins ever minted.

A Burnished Silver Eagle is an Uncirculated, limited-release edition of the popular silver bullion American Silver Eagle coin. Burnished coins are collectible options that have visual brilliance, but are produced differently and have slightly different visual appearance.

The first burnished Silver American Eagle coin was released by the United States Mint in 2006. The term “burnished” is used to describe the coins’ unique finish. Burnished coins appear matte and less shiny when compared to a standard bullion coin. This is the result of polishing the blanks before they are struck.

The U.S. Mint’s burnished Eagle coins are produced in limited quantities at the West Point Mint in New York. For this reason, the coins include a “W” mintmark on the reverse side of the coin

2006 – 2020:

The obverse design of the American Eagle Silver Coin uses the “Walking Liberty” design by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman from the 1916 half dollar. Lady Liberty walks in profile, draped in the folds of the American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge. Her right arm is extended, and she carries laurel and oak branches in her left.

The reverse design embodies the country’s military strength and commitment to peace in the form of an eagle spreading its wings behind the union shield, clutching arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other. An inverted pyramid of thirteen stars representing the original thirteen colonies floats above the eagle’s head.

The 2016 Silver Eagle features a special “30th Anniversary” lettering edge to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this popular coin series.

2021 – Later:

The obverse design of the American Eagle Silver Coin uses the “Walking Liberty” design by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman from the 1916 half dollar. Lady Liberty walks in profile, draped in the folds of the American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge. Her right arm is extended, and she carries laurel and oak branches in her left.

In 2021, the U.S. Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin program with a refreshed design. Thanks to technological advancements in the design and minting process, the design now encompasses some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible.

The reverse design of the American Silver Eagle (Type 2 Design) is a complete departure from the past with a new rendition of the eagle: an eagle in the wild coming in for a landing, a single oak branch – our national tree and a symbol of strength – in its talon. The inscriptions remain the same; “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER”, and “ONE DOLLAR.”
