AUSTRALIA 1915-27. ERROR! 5sh Kangaroo with listed variety "Spencer's Gulf short & thick".
A very lightly used 5/- Roo, 3rd WMK. SG 42.
Looking at the close-up image of 2 stamps, the variety (top stamp) can be seen clearly when compared to the "normal" stamp below. The Spencer's Gulf is much shorter and stumpy when compared with the "normal" stamp.
The "normal" stamp is also SG 42 and is for comparison only and NOT for sale.
Good, lightly used 5/- 'Roos are hard to come by. They are mostly often toned, or badly centred, or have poor perfs, or are heavily cancelled....or all four!
This looks pretty decent. There is a bend from the 2nd A of Australia, running along the east Queensland coast line to the right frame. It doesn't appear to detract and is hard to spot at frst, but it is there, so I add for accuracy. Interestingly, there is also some white shading along the east Queensland coast that appears unrelated - but is not listed as a variety.
The perfs are unusually good, it is well centred, clean and displays a listed variety.
Overall, a nice looking example of this classic stamp.
My 2007 (Brusden White) Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue (ACSC) lists this as 44(D)h.
