Best known as German soldier Paul Baumer in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) and for playing Dr. Kildare in nine movies. Received an Academy Award nomination for Best Leading Actor for his role as Dr. Robert Richardson in Johnny Belinda (1948). Ayres was a conscientious objector. After several months at C.S.P.
