Title / Subject: 'A Modern Map of Northumberland, Drawn from the latest Surveys; Corrected & Improved by the best Authorities'

Date: c.1765 (the first edition was published in 1765 & two further early editions followed in 1766). Although the map is undated the combined sellers imprint of Sayer and Bowles indicates that this is from an early edition of Ellis's English Atlas. There were several later editions which had slightly different sellers imprints with some having maps printed on both sides of the sheet.

Size: The entire sheet measures approximately 227mm x 287mm, blank verso.

Description: A detailed, original, antique, copper-plate engraved county map of Northumberland. It includes a decorative title cartouche, compass rose and distance scale. It was published in Ellis's English Atlas and based closely on the county maps by Thomas Kitchin which were published in 'England Illustrated in 1763.

Condition: Very good condition. Light toning commensurate with age with a few instances of slightly darker toning. Centrefold as published. Uncoloured as published. Occasional handling / dust marks to the margins. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition.
