Michele Mainoli (1927-1991) was born in rural Italy, his father a farmer, but with passion for painting and drawing. From childhood, Michele clearly showed his vocation and went on to study at the Brera Academy in Milan where he won the prize for drawing in 1949. An innovative artist and first and foremost a printmaker, Mainoli experimented with the different engraving techniques and gradually focused in on his very personal, but decidedly surreal, style. The 1950s saw his first important exhibitions and travel abroad, he won prizes at the Venice Biennale of 1957 and again in 1959. Mainoli's works are exhibited in numerous public and private collections both in Italy and abroad.
