FOREWORD
Mighty Midgets at War The Saga of the LCS(L) Ships from Iwo Jima to Vietnam
It was a long time ago when thousands of us, most in our early 20s, found ourselves assigned to U.S. Navy ships so small and so little known that we had never heard of them. We headed for the thick of World War II, not in airplanes, submarines, battle wagons and destroyers, but on LCS(L)s as part of the amphibious forces. We were soon under fire in dangerous waters, and were called upon to hew to our training and mission to prevail. We hoped to survive, however, not all of us made it home and many were badly wounded.
In recent years, LCS veterans have been having annual reunions, at which those momentous days are relived with some amazement. Every man on my ship, the 122, has a different recollection of the events of the two days, June 10-11, 1945, when we were stretched to our limits. Eleven of my crew perished at that time. We survivors, most of us in our 70s (and not our early 70s either) have gradually pieced our memories together to make a coherent whole. That is what Robin L. Rielly has done in this book, put lots of pieces together to make a complete record.
We LCS veterans are very proud of our record in World War II. The role we played was much larger than were our individual ships. It is important that this account is now being made available to a wide audience as part of the history of the United States Navy. Robin L. Rielly has done us, the Navy and history a great service in writing this book, and we salute him.
