History
of Edwin M. Knowles
In 1900, Edwin M. Knowles
founded the Edwin M. Knowles China Company. The company's offices were located
in East Liverpool, Ohio. The plant was in Chester, West Virginia. Knowles' goal
was to manufacture the highest quality semi-vitreous china ware. Products
included dinnerware, kitchenware, specialties, and toilet wares.
In 1938, Vincent Broomhall
designed a line of kitchen accessories available in seven colors. Knowles
continued to introduce new lines, including Potomac (1941), Twin Oaks
(1953-1954), Four Seasons (1959), and Street Song (1959). Each line featured
dozens of patterns.
Knowles ceased operations in
1962.
