VILLETTE

by "Currer Bell"

Charlotte Bronte's third novel, the last to be published in her lifetime. The book was issued in three volumes by Smith, Elder & Co., London, in 1853.

This is the true first printing of the first edition, complete with original covers and the 12-page publisher's catalog at the back of volume one.

The books have defects but remain in reasonably good condition overall. The covers show general wear, mostly at the edges; volume one has a water stain on the back. The bindings are largely sound; the binding of volume one is cracked at the contents page, and that of volume three at the title page. All three volumes have vintage owner inscriptions on the title pages; all three also each have two small marks on the front free endpapers, where an ownership label was apparently affixed (last photo). The texts all have signs of age and use; the most serious flaw is a water stain to volume three which affects the bottom corner of the entire text.

In all about an average set for books this age, well below the usual price. Very rare and highly sought in any condition.

Each book measures 5"X 8", 324, 319, & 350 pages plus prelims and the catalog.
