Leah Lopez  (b.1977)

20th/21st Century New Mexico/New York Realist best known for paintings.

Original signed oil painting on board

Signed lower right--see photos

Site: 13.5"x 9.5" Frame: 18.5"x 14.5"

Looks good, in "as found" original condition, minor surface grime, minor surface abrasions, minor frame wear--please look at photos carefully.

Fantastic composition by Leah Lopez depicting a wine bottle and white garlic bulbs on a wooden table, executed with a beautiful, dramatic sense of light.

This is a fine example of Lopez's paintings with a fantastic subject. My price of $899 is extremely reasonable and far below what one would be expected to pay for it in a gallery or at auction.

Please check out the other artwork in our store on ebay. We regularly feature newly acquired artwork, from antique and vintage to contemporary and modern. Select the "See other items" tab on our page.

Biography:

LEAH LOPEZ

American Artist, b. 1977.

Born and raised in the mystical environment of New Mexico, Leah was captivated by the magic of art and its ability to transport the viewer to another space or time.  Her preferences began to surface by engagement with surrealism's potential for poetry and narrative.  Through drawing, she discovered movement, even underlying rhythm, often traced back to an interest in the Baroque sensibility.  The introduction to oil painting made it possible to connect movement with drama and Romanticism.  All the artists Leah studied under shared a common awareness and philosophy that prioritized the natural human experience and a responsive presence that led to her signature way of moving the paint around and conveying tactile quality and luminosity often observed in her paintings.

Leah's studio education began in 2000 under Larry Gluck in Los Angeles.  There she gained the foundation and discipline to become a professional artist.  When Leah returned to New Mexico and continued her studio practice independently.  Having gained teaching experience as part of her education, she offered beginner art classes at the University Of New Mexico's CE program. At this time Leah began learning from the Artist Gregg Kreutz of NY, and soon after, Taos artists Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel.  These artists' work and sensibilities resonated, and she learned to master the process of light and shadow.

In 2004, Leah began exhibiting her artwork.  The response was tremendously positive as she was honored with awards and recognition as a young emerging artist. Betty Sabo, an established artist, and sculptor, realized her potential, purchased Leah’s painting, and invited her to exhibit annually at the prestigious Albuquerque Museum Foundation.  Leah was represented by the Downey Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe.  Shadid Gallery of Edmond would later represent her, and the Meyer Gallery of Scottsdale. As her art career started to ascend, Leah experienced a great loss with the sudden passing of her only sister.  The loss shook Leah to her core.  Unable to paint the same as before, Leah needed a change to heal and carry on. So it made sense to pack up and move to New York City when Gregg Kreutz invited her to be a class monitor at the Art Students League of New York.

Her subsequent years in New York proved enlightening and exhilarating for creative exploration.  She always accepted opportunities to engage with other emerging and established artists.  One of her early experiences was time spent with Nelson Shanks, who invited her to draw at his studio as he painted one of his beautiful models. Watching the master at work was an inspiration, and his words of wisdom were not taken for granted and stayed with her in the coming years as challenges arose. About this time, Leah began teaching painting classes at the New York Academy of Art CE department teaching still life oil painting for several years.  She gained private students but was unable to accommodate them all together. Moving into a new studio in 2012 and starting Leah Lopez Atelier at the historical 41 Union Square Studios.  Coincidentally, Leah was painting in the same studio once occupied by a beloved teacher, Sherrie McGraw.  A simple and charming coincidence let her know she was on the right track.  Open to new ideas and growth Leah found inspiration in the work and character of artist Daniel Sprick.  His work and philosophy of life and painting were important to study and observe.  He encouraged her in the development of figurative art and landscape.

Leah's artwork has been exhibited at the Haggin Museum, the Booth Western Museum, the Steamboat Art Museum, and prestigious establishments such as the Salmagundi Club, the New York Academy of Art, the National Association of Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, and Art Renewal Center. She's represented in Carmel, Cape Cod, and in Saint Augustine, Florida.  Presently, Leah works out of a studio in upstate NY, where she is inspired by the figure and nature.
