For sale is a splendid original 1862 Civil War ordnance manual "The Ordnance Manual For The Use Of The Officers Of The United States Army," third edition, Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott & Co. 559 pages, complete, with all 33 plates at end of book.

Interestingly, this copy is signed and inscribed by KIdder Randolph Breese on title page. Inscription reads "Compts of K.P. Reese, Commander USN." in red pencil. Somewhat annoyingly, there are also some pencil scribbles over the inscription, possibly an owner's initials, as well as an ownership stamp for a "C.R. Moore." I imagine buyer could erase most of the non-inscribed pencil markings should they desire.

Reese is a fascinating figure, who fought in the Mexican-American War, was part of Matthew Perry's famous Expedition to Japan in the 1850s, then became a hero in the Civil War, helping to capture New Orleans and playing a prominent role at Vicksburg. He later became a top Ordnance officer in Washington DC, where a street is named after him, and in New Orleans among other prominent positions. The US Navy named a destroyer after him. A great example of this rare book.
