The Goddess Bastet was one of the ancient Egyptian's most fierce
Goddesses and was represented by a cat. As cats were domesticated
she became less fierce and was represented as a woman with a
cat head. An important cult existed at Memphis where Bastet
held great importance with the residents.

Mummified cats had their own burial ground and countless
cat sculptures were found here as offerings to Bastet.
Cats were considered members of the family and given
a place of honor.

Bastet was the goddess of fertility and also of protection.
Since cats often caught and killed scorpions, snakes
and other pests, it is natural that a cat Goddess would
assume this role.

This sculpted cat bust is incredible!  Well preserved and with
intricate carvings, this work is impressive.  The eyes have an
almost hypnotic quality and intensity that are fitting for
a fierce Goddess! Gold hue polychroming is present and
changes to a coppery shade on one side of the sculpture.
Cats belonging to royalty were permitted to wear
gold jewelry and decorations!

Very fine condition!  Presents superbly!
This artifact begs to be put on a desk, shelf or some
prominent spot where it can 'protect' your interiors
and enrich your decor!

Perfect for your Palm Springs atomic ranch, NY penthouse
or London summer house!
