NEW NOTE: A very informed watcher noted that there these units originally had springs (he noted that there are supposed to be 3 of them) inside the feed tube that guide the pencil as it is inserted. This one I am listing seems to have only one spring inside. See last 2 added pics.

This is a wonderful “Automatic Pencil Sharpener” dating from about 1907 that has survived into our own time in perfect working condition. This highly collectible item design is illustrative of the dynamic American mechanical ingenuity that continued to flourish since the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution and on into the early 20th century. Made of steel, provided with 3 sharpening blades and designed to automatically hold the pencil at just the right angle for sharpening, the decal labeL reads as foillows:

U.S. AUTOMATIC PENCIL SHARPENER

MFD. BY AUTOMATIC PENCIL SHARPENER CO., Inc.

PAT. OCT xx, ‘06 - OCT 15, ‘07

FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING

Still works. This would make a great addition to any collection of vintage writing artifacts.
