In 1957 the car manufacturers NSU-Fiat were forced to rebrand. The name Neckar was chosen due to the close proximity of the River of that name to the Heilbronn plant. The new name being registered in 1957. The cars were based on Fiats Italian cars, but the German subsiduary did have some design autonomy and the cars all differ from their Italian counterparts. From 1962 production began to be scaled down Neckar citing the high labour costs in Germany and the artificially high value of the Deutsche Mark. Neckar finally closed in 1971, having froduced a total of 370,000 cars in its 14 years, over an eight model range.
