Tsushima

Izuhara clan bill

2 Momme

( -1867)

FRONT

・備前田代(Bizen Tashiro, Issuer)

・銀弐匁預(Silver 2 Momme)

・産物会所(The Mint)

・Dyed red to prevent counterfeiting. This red dye cost 3 - 10 times as much as the same amount of gold in the mainland Japan.

・However, trade was thriving in Tsushima, and the red dye could be imported cheaply from overseas.

・The number of such bills issued is extremely small. This is because the coins commonly used in Tsushima were silver coins such as Chogin and Mameitagin used for trade.

・One of only four clan bills issued in Tsushima.

・Some say this bill was issued in 1747, but this is not certain.
