Chambre Claire Universelle
or
Camera Lucida.

This articulated Chambre Claire Universelle or camera lucida has its' case and it is in "as found" condition
One side of the clamp is engraved with the details.

The camera lucida was patented in 1807 by William Hyde Wollaston it is an optical device used as a drawing aid by artists which "projects" the subject being viewed on the surface which the artist is drawing. The artist sees both scene and drawing surface simultaneously, as in a photographic double exposure. This allows the artist to duplicate key points of the scene on the drawing surface, thus aiding in the accurate rendering of perspective.
The camera is made from plated steel and there are cracks or splits to the metal ant it has retained a good bright finish, however, there are some wear and use marks..
The articulated joints work as they should and the inner tubes slide up and down smoothly and they lock in to place when the ring is tightened.
The lens holder has a roughly cut replacement prismatic glass lens.
The clamp works well.
The case is velvet lined on the bottom and there are no cracks or chips to the wooden case, the brass catches work as they should.
I have tried to show the condition in the photographs
.
The camera lucida is sold as a collectors item and we have not tested it for clarity of image.
