This vintage chess set, featuring “mushroom” style pawns attributed to Russia, is in wonderful condition. All felts are original.

A pleasant patina has developed over the several decades that these pieces have been used. The old-growth wood the pieces are crafted from has a pleasant, tightly banded appearance. This is especially noticeable on the white pieces.

These chessmen are finely carved.

The design of this set is unique; I have found no matching examples of this particular set anywhere online or in literature. The knights are reminiscent of Zagreb 1959 style knights, each having their heads tilted downwards with horizontal notches running the length of the mane. Rooks have a graceful swooping base supporting the top of the piece. The bishops have an interesting elongated top.

The king measures 3.75” in height. The base measures 1.25”.

These chessmen come with a wooden slide-top box for safe storage.
