Copy of a COMET/AUTHENTICAST

British Army Armored Car

#5003 HUMBER MK I Armoured Scout Car

WW2 Metal ID Type model 1/108 scale

This is a copy of the Comet-Authenticast Model #5003 of the British Army HUMBER MK I or MK IV 4x4 Armored Car produced from mid 1941, designed to provide mobile Scouting and Liaison roles for the British Army during WW2.   The HUMBER MK Is were armed with a 15mm Besa Machinegun similar to that of the Light Tank MkVIC or other Armoured Cars. The later Humber Mk IV was armed with a 37mm M5 and M6 guns as on US Stuart, Lee and Greyhound Armoured vehicles.

The Humber first saw action in North Africa, and later in Europe and South-East Asia.  It served with the British Army and British Indian Army where the 15mm gun regulated them to primarily Command, Scouting and Reconnaissance Duties.

Over 5,400 Humber vehicles were built.  Crews liked their mobility and reliability; they were easier to maintain than tracked vehicles.  The Mk IV Variation had an US M5 or M6 37mmgun. Some Humbers were used a Command Vehicles with their main gun removed.  The Canadian version was called the Fox.

Post war, many were retained for Constabulary Duties in many Former Commonwealth and Allied military’s such as Denmark, Netherlands, Mexico, Portugal and Italy., They were mainly as for Internal Security Duties.  They participated in WW2, and many localized conflicts thereafter.  They were used by the Indian Army in the Invasion of Goa and Indo-China War in the early 1960’s.

The HUMBER MK I weighed some 5 tones, and 15’ long.  It had 15mm armor.  They were powered by a Humber 27 4.1 litre 6 cylinder petrol engine driving it up to 50 mph on roads with a range of 200 miles.  It was armed with a 15mm (.60”) Besa machinegun, and one 7.92mm Besa Machine gun. Mk I’s had a crew of three.

This model was manufactured by an unknown (to me) manufacture.  It seems to be a copy of a Comet/Authenticast model of this same scale. Comet/ Authenticast moulds were sold to Superior in the 1960’s, and later bought by Quality Castings in the 1980’s.   This model differs from the Comet produce done in the axle mounting and some other small details
