Even wonder where the “$” sign originated?

The American colonist abbreviated transaccions in Spanish Milled Dollars by drawing a pillar wrapped with a scroll. The pillar is wrapped with a scroll, approximating the symbol the US use today for the national currency. Indeed, early Americans also calle these coins “Pillar Dollars”.

The “Spanish Milled Dollars” were widely used and accepted as payment in the Thirteen Colonies. The US government accorded them status of official legal tender. The story of George Washington throwing a silver dollar across the Potomac River is indeed true, then doubtless it was a “Spanish Silver Dollar” like this one.

The Spanish Silver Dollar were struck in large quantities and were used in the US through the Civil War. Then the government withdrew them from circulation and they were melted down.
