BACK

・五厘○○(stamp, 5 Rin the Ministry of Finance)

・Known as a clan bill with the most humorous picture.

・It was published in the early Edo period.

・Regarding stamp(五厘○○, 5 Rin the Ministry of Finance)

In 1872, the Meiji government replaced the old clan bills with Meiji tsuho (bills) newly issued. However, since the number of Meiji tsuho issued was small, the government decided to reuse existing clan bills with the stamp of the Ministry of Finance as small denomination bills.

・The 4 Fun clan bills were stamped with 5 Rin the Ministry of Finance in Hagi clan. In other words, 4 Fun clan bills were reused as 5 Rin.

・It has recently become clear that the resetting of prices differs depending on the region. For example, in the current Tokushima area, 1 Monme clan bills came to be reused as 8 Rin.

★The ear of this clan bill have been cut off. In other words, the use of this clan bill was banned by the government in 1872.

★It is extremely rare for such banned bill to be reused.

・There are surprisingly few clan bills with denominations containing the number 4. This is because in Japan, 4 is the number that means death.
