Exceptionally rare and highly sought after, 1870’s American Horse Drawn Tin Wind-Up / Clockwork Single Horse Gig / Buggy Toy manufactured by George Brown Co. of Cromwell, Connecticut.


    This outstanding, mid 19th century, Clockwork Toy measures approx. 7 1/2" long overall, 4 1/2” tall to the top of the original driver’s head and 2 3/4” wide across the cast iron, rear wheels.


    This important, horse drawn American Clockwork driven toy is pictured in the George Brown Toy Sketchbook. The original Driver is seated on a high, open bench seat. The carriage is pulled by a single white horse. There are two small, front wheel that are attached by a pair of posts to the underside of the horse’s belly. A delicate wire is affixed to the right hand wheel and the horses left rear hoof. When the Toy moves across a surface the horse moves in a galloping motion. The clockwork mechanism causes the axle of the rear wheels to turn making the Gig move forward and the horse to rock back and forth in a galloping type motion.


    This very rare and original, 1870’s George Brown Single Horse Gig Clockwork / Wind-Up Toy is in very good condition. It is 100% complete and there are no cracks, breaks, physical damage or repairs of any kind other than the fact that the bill of the driver’s hat in bent forward and partially split from the hat. The clockwork mechanism works like it did the day the Toy was manufactured – smooth, strong and silent. The surface paint is somewhat worn but 100% original – the surfaces have not been repainted, touched up, restored or altered in any way. Overall this rare and delicate 150+ years old Toy is very well preserved and displays nicely.
