This pair of "Bonzo" dog "I'm Salt" "I'm Pep" ceramic/porcelain salt and pepper shakers are in very good vintage condition.

"Bonzo" was created by George Studdy around 1911 and became very popular during the 1920s when the canine character appeared regularly in Sketch magazine, published by the London Illustrated News.

Readers of the magazine named the dog "Bonzo" and even though the whimsical pup retired from from Sketch in 1927, he appeared in a number of advertisements, a book series, a number of short films, and was licensed by manufacturers of such products as soft toys, jigsaws, confectionery tins, and porcelain figurines including salt and pepper shaker sets like this one around the world.

Nearly 50 years later, "Bonzo" reappeared and developed a whole new generation of fans and followers when he became the mascot of the British "Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band" in the 1960s.

Both pieces of this darling set features the characteristic Bonzo Dog face, body, and smile. One of the each dog's ears is black and the other white. Dogs are crafted from white porcelain, with peach, orangey-red and gold accents. On the chest of one dog are the words: "I'm Salt" while the other reads: "I'm Pep."

Shakers measure approximately 3" tall and 2" wide. Both are marked "Made in Japan" on the bottom, but actual maker is unknown.  All and all, a very nice vintage set that would be a beautiful addition to any salt and pepper shaker collection or a nice gift for a fan of the Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band, or one who collects whimsical dog figurines.

Very good condition, measures 3" tall and 2 1/4" wide with what I believe are the original toppers that are loose inside of each shaker.  There is a small nick to the black of one ear tip and a hairline crack on Pep's side along with the paint loss that is visible in photos.  Nonetheless, cared for over time and these were Grandmas' and in her kitchen.  We lost her in 2003 and now as part of downsizing, we've made the decision to part with this adorable and sentimental vintage set.  Please examine photos as they are an important part of the description for your review and consideration as well as your assessment of condition.
