Marcel GOUPY (1886-1954) was a watercolor painter before becoming passionate about ceramics and glass. A graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris, his meeting with Georges (Géo) Rouard in 1909 was decisive for his career. He begins the beginning of his collaboration with the gallery owner Rouard by providing drawings and decorations for glassware. These first enamelled pieces appeared in 1914. In 1919, he became chief decorator at the gallery then its artistic director in 1929 on the death of Géo Rouard, until 1954 in the workshop of the "Cristallerie de la Paix" store, located at 34-36 avenue of the Opera in Paris. Georges Rouard (1874-1929) is a learned art lover, a collector. In 1920, he presented himself as a ceramist-glassmaker, owner of the Maison la Paix, and president since 1920 of the Chambre Syndicale de la Céramique et de la Verrerie, departmental inspector of technical education as well as member of the board of directors of the Central Union of Decorative Arts. But it was in 1900 that he took over at 34 avenue de l'Opéra in Paris, the direction of the auction house "A la Paix", founded twenty years earlier by Jules Mabut. In the 1920s, this house was renamed the Rouard gallery. This shop presents tableware services from different manufacturers (royal factory of Saxony, Daum, Val Saint Lambert, Limoges, Boch Frères and Sèvres), crystals and artistic furniture from Gallé, porcelain services.
By presenting tableware and decorative arts in the same place of sale and by favoring unique pieces and semi-industrial editions, the Rouard gallery reaches an audience of collectors and wealthy amateurs attracted by the reputation of the shop. . Becoming a benchmark of quality and prestige in this environment, it is considered one of the best centers of French decorative art. The pieces are bought by French and foreign collectors, by art critics, by the State.
