Description: Rackham brings to life the final two stories from 'The Ring of the Niblung' , Wagner's epic opera cycle known as his 'Ring cycle' and based upon characters from the Norse sagas and the Germanic 'Nibelungenlied'. Now well-established in his career, Rackham chose to take on a number of darker and more sinister book illustrations, which he believed might be less appealing to children. However, C. S. Lewis, who encountered the book as a child, later said of it, '[his] pictures, which seemed to me then to be the very music made visible, plunged me a few fathoms deeper into my delight. I have seldom coveted anything as I coveted that book' (Hamilton, pp. 99 - 101). Presentation copy (stamped into ttitle page) of the trade edition with the additional illustrated endpapers (Latimore and Haskell, pp. 37-38) and 30 full page colour plates mounted on tan paper, pp. x, 182
