Paris & Montpellier: Firmin Didot for Gabon & Co, 1821. Bound in contemporary quarter pebbled black calf over marbled boards, with four raised bands on spines and gilt titles. Ex-libris bookplates of Emile Cazelles (1831-9108) on both pastedowns.

8vos, 2 vols in 2. xiv pp, 314 pp, (2); (4), 315 pp, (1), plus 3 folding engraved plates. Textually complete, but lacking Plate I (apparently never bound in).

First edition of this translation with notes by Jean-Baptiste Bousquet and Nicolas Bellanger, who took as their basis the fifth Italian edition. The translators add their own lengthy footnotes to Scarpa's original text. At the rear of volume II are found 3 crisply-engraved plates (signed 'Adam') illustrating disorders of the eye and surgical instruments. Each plate is discussed in the 'Explication' found on pp. 310-315.
