“Dog Sled Championship” (1953) 16mm Film Home Movie, Fairbanks AK, Hunt/Fish, VS


Film captures several hunting and fishing excursions with ptarmigan, bear, caribou, salmon, grayling and trout where the hunter gatherers were flown in by bush plane and float plane. But then the hunters get back to civilization for the North American Championship Dog Derby in Fairbanks, Alaska with Horace Smoke and his dog team winning the race.


Filmmaker has inserted title frames describing the footage which is very helpful.


VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED: some of the images of killing animals on the film may be disturbing to some viewers.


FILM CONDITION:

The film is in acceptable condition and ran smoothly on a manual thread Revere projector. There is streaking and the last section has some watermarking.


VINEGAR SYNDROME:

A-D strip indicates that the film is VS level 1. Film is currently in cold storage for preservation.

1 min 15 sec - cave, camp, packing out, plane flying in for pick up

1 min 45 sec - grayling fishing on Tangle Lake

2 min - posing with grizzly bear kill, float plane flying in for pick up, caribou kill, float plane flying in for pick up on Crater Lake, lake trout fishing

4 min - North American Champion Dog Derby, Fairbanks AK, people gathering, dog sleds, racers, Horace (Holy) Smoke wins, dog teams crossing finish line (there is some emulsion watermarking on this section as shown in the video and photos)
