This bowl is a wonderful example of San Ildefonso “black-on-black” bowl featuring a polished geometric design pattern of a highly stylized Avanyu (serpent) motif. Signature incised on back reads “Marie” along with pencil marking “EL”. According to notes included when I purchased this pot at auction several years ago explained that the initials EL stands for Edgar Lee Hewitt, former director of the Santa Fe museum in the early 1900’s. The story goes that he was the person who enlisted Maria Martinez assistance to figure out how to replicate the black on black design that had been found in shards of prehistoric pottery. This piece probably dates to around 1920, so it’s one of the earliest pieces she produced and signed. Pottery has been verbally appraised at between $6000 and $8000.

It is in wonderful vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or scuffs. It has some surface wear commensurate with its age. Truly a beautiful collector's piece.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. This piece will be a wonderful addition to any collector.
