LEGACY

Published to accompany a project commissioned for London Design Festival 2019 by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) in which Sir John Sorrell CBE invited London’s top cultural figures to collaborate with some of Europe’s most exciting designers to create a legacy piece - a heirloom object exploring the performative and aesthetic qualities of American red oak.

Commissioners: Maria Balshaw (Tate), Alex Beard (Royal Opera House), Ian Blatchford (The Science Museum), Iwona Blazwick (Whitechapel Gallery), Tristram Hunt (V&A Museum), Kwame Kwei-Armah (Young Vic), Amanda Nevill (British Film Institute), Hans Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Galleries), Tamara Rojo (English National Ballet) and John Sorrell (LDF).

Designers: Max Lamb, Terence Woodgate, Marlene Huissoud, Raw Edges, Jasper Morrison Studio, Tomoko Azumi, Sebastian Cox, Studiomama, Martino Gamper and Dallas-Pierce-Quintero.

Book design by A Practice for Everyday Life. The materiality of the publication design is connected to the red oak material used within the Legacy project. Debossed, uncoated cover stock makes an oblique reference to the sensation of wood to touch, and the papers used within the publication are recycled and FSC-certified.
