This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “The Perfumed Garden of the Shaykh Nefzawi,” translated into English by Sir Richard Burton, edited, with an Introduction and Additional Notes by Alan Hull Walton.

It was published by Granada Publishing Limited, of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1980 and is a reprint of one of their “Panther” paperback publications.

The Perfumed Garden – for the Repose of the Mind also known as The Perfumed Garden of Sensual Delight is the classic work of Arabian erotology.  It was written by Sheikh Nefzawi, in the fifteenth century (probably between 1410 and 1434) and was banned and suppressed, yet it is a uniquely humorous collection of ancient folk tales and sound advice meriting its own place in world literature.

The burning of Sir Richard Burton’s revised version by his wife Isabel is one of the most notorious incidents in literary history.

Shaykh or Sheikh Nefzawi or Nefzaoui, in full, Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Nafzawi (or Abu Abdullah Muhammad ben Umar Nafzawi).  His work first became widely known in the English speaking world through this 1886 translation into English by British explorer, Sir Richard Francis Burton.
