VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “The Years of Promise,” subtitled “The Second Book of an Autobiography 1908-1919,” by Cecil Roberts, with 19 illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of the Author, aged 18, by Helen Stiebel.

It was published by Hodder and Stoughton, of London, and is the 1968 FIRST EDITION (stated).

Cecil Roberts (1892-1976) was an English journalist, poet, dramatist and novelist.  During the First World War he was Literary Editor to the Liverpool Post and also worked as a special correspondent to the Royal Navy, Royal Flying Corps and the Arm.

In 1920 he became Editor of the Nottingham Journal, Nottingham being the city in which he was born and raised. Aged 28 at the time, he was the youngest editor of a morning newspaper in Britain. Five years later, the income he made from his novels and other books allowed him to retire from journalism in 1925 and concentrate on writing novels, poetry and travel books.

From the 1930s to the early 1950s he lived at Pilgrim Cottage, Lower Assendon, near Henley-on-Thames in South Oxfordshire.  From there he wrote the novels ‘Pilgrim Cottage’ (1933), ‘The Guests Arrive’ (1934) and ‘Volcano’ (1935) that were published in an Pilgrim Cottage Omnibus edition in 1938. He also described his walks from the cottage in the South Oxfordshire area in three books: ‘Gone Rustic’ (1934), ‘Gone Rambling’ (1835) and ‘Gone Afield’ (1935).

During the Second World War, Roberts worked for Lord Halifax, the UK Ambassador to the United States.

Overall, this prolific author produced some 60 books.

The book measures 9 inches x 6 inches x 1.25 inches and has 286 pages + illustrations.

The book is in good, bright, clean and neat condition for its age, with erar and tears to the edges of the otherwise similarly very good original dust-jacket (price-clipped). There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.

A wonderfully illustrated vintage FIRST EDITION.
