This is an antique silk embroidery of a bouquet of roses and other flowers.

I am fairly certain this is original to the frame, which would date it from the early to mid 19th century, circa 1830s or 40s. It may actually even be a little older.

The overall frame measures 17 inches high x 18 inches wide (43.2 cm x 45.7 cm). The entire piece of silk measures 13 inches high x 14 inches wide (33 cm x 35.5 cm). The visual part of it measures 10 1/4 inches high x 11 inches wide (26 cm x 27.9 cm). The molding width of the frame measures 2 1/4 inches (.7 cm).

When I think of silk embroidery, China always comes to mind. I am wondering if this was made there and then put into an American frame. I’m not sure. Please use your judgment.

When I purchased this, it was being held together with just a few nails in the back. The cardboard is definitely not original, but it seems someone put it there to secure the piece. I put it back together with framing staples.

If you are looking for something in very good condition, this is not it. The silk background has a number of tears along with scattered staining. Still, the embroidered part itself is in very good condition.

The frame has some type of a coating over it and a number of repairs going around the exterior. There is scattered chipping to the surface. The sides show signs of dripped paint from when the exterior was painted over, along with other wear. You can actually see the original gilded finish on the sides, but it got damaged. It has those great old hand cut nails which are almost 200 years old.

I’m fairly certain the glass, which is referred to as eglomise or reverse painted, is also original. It has a few small scratches to the paint at the bottom. It sits in the frame oh so slightly crooked.

There is a hole on the top side where there was a hanging ring originally. The piece is fairly heavy, so I can’t imagine that holding on for too long though.

Even given its condition, I couldn’t resist it because it was so old and has such a beautiful look about it.

It weighs 5 pounds 7 1/2 ounces (2.482 kg).
