This is an antique mid 19th century primitive painted frame.

I would estimate it dates circa 1840s or 1850s.

The overall frame measures 13 7/8 inches x 17 1/4 inches (35.2 cm x 43.8 cm). The back opening size measures 10 inches x 13 1/2 inches (25.4 cm x 34.3 cm). The molding width measures 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm).

If you are looking for a frame with a perfect finish, this is definitely not for you. But if you’re looking for something with a distressed look, this is a real beauty. There are numerous spots where the paint has scratched, chipped or generally worn off. There is one spot though in the upper right corner where it looks like some of the glue from an old price tag or something is left on. I didn’t know how to remove it so it remains.

The frame has a beautiful molding profile. There are a number of steps all the way towards the sight edge. Even the color is beautiful.

There are slight openings where three of the pieces of molding meet and a larger one in the bottom right corner in the photos. Not a big deal though. The frame has a very slight twist to it. You only notice this if it is lying flat down. I took a photo of this.

The corners are attached with lap joints and very early nails.

The frame is covered in a wood veneer. There is a piece of this veneer missing on the outside in the bottom right corner in the photos measuring 4 1/2 inches x 1/2 inch. I don’t think this would be very noticeable when it is hanging up.

There is no glass.

It would be great for an old oil painting, drawing, folk art work, sampler, fraktur, silhouette, etc.

It weighs a little over 1 lb. 11 oz. (770 g).

It has what I always look for in frames, that wonderful old world look!
