This beautiful viola from the renowned John Juzek workshop dates from the post-World War II period, when the Czech maker’s workshop was moved to Germany from Schönbach just over the border in what was then Czechoslovakia. Those these instruments were in demand at that time and so were crafted in great numbers, all the while preserving the high standards of craftsmanship that had become associated since the beginning of the 1900s with the Juzek name. It was beginning in this period that a great many Juzeks were produced for export to the United Staes. Juzek string instruments went on to become the mainstay in many American public school string programs, most notably, in the New York City Public Schools.

This particular viola is in unusually solid shape and has minimal signs of wear, so it may have originally been privately owned. This assumption is also suggested by the fact it is unmarked in terms of a school music program ID, logo, or brand-stamp.

This instrument produces a huge and resonant sound. At a comfortable body length of 15 inches, it is delightfully easy to play on. This viola would be ideal for an advancing student, a serious amateur player, or a professional violinist wanting to expand into viola playing. The bow included with the viola is a new top of line (“master” level) viola bow from the highly regarded Rainbow workshop. It is of pernambuco wood, with a round stick and an ebony frog with mother-of-pearl accents. The lightweight but very sturdy case is also new and of high quality, satin lined, well-cushioned, with hygrometer to monitor humidity and a full-length music pocket as part of the black canvas cover
