This sale is for a
vintage hardback COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET entitled “The World of William
Clissold,” subtitled “A Novel at a New Angle,” H. G. Wells (1866–1946).
The set was printed
by Waterlow & Sons Limited, Printers, of London, Dunstable & Watford, in
MCMXXXIII (1933) and is COMPLETE in two volumes.
This was H. G. Wells's
longest novel.
It is divided into
six “Books” in addition to a "Note before the
Title Page" and an "Epilogue." The theme is
liberal living in a contemporary post-first world war world.
In the first Book,
William Clissold describes his general worldview,
describing his loss of religious faith and view of human life as "The
Adventure of Mankind;" this part includes a description of a meeting with Carl
Gustav Jung, whom Wells had met in 1924.
The second Book, recounts the upbringing of
William Clissold and his brother Dickon, which was violently disrupted by the
suicide of their businessman father, Richard Clissold, after he was convicted
and sentenced to prison for fraud; it includes long passages on "systems
in history," the ideas of Karl Marx, and the development of the
institution of money.
The third Book tells the story of his
brother's family life and innovative career in advertising, and includes
extensive commentary on the historical importance of the First World War.
The fourth Book deals with Clissold’s love
life; the fifth Book develops the notion of a worldwide "open
conspiracy" of business leaders, politicians, scientists, and intellectuals
to establish a "World Republic".
The sixth Book deals with the relations
between men and women, and culminates in his decision to marry Clementina.
The epilogue by his brother Dickon recounts
the death of William Clissold and Clementina.
The books measure 7.3
inches x 5 inches, will require 2.25 inches along your bookshelf and have 510
pages.
The books are in
good condition for their age, internally neat and clean, with minor wear/bumps
and are a little blemished to the original hardback covers, with a previous
owner’s name on a smart bookplate at the front of volume II and no other ink or
pencil markings in either of the books. The bindings are used but good with no
loose or missing pages. There are no
dust-jackets.
A wonderful
vintage COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices
from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs. However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically
changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their
control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels
being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the
World).
These costs are a direct result of:
“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best
value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are
significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view
of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”
If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in
the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement
Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.
Unwinsbooks always
obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail. Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be
sent by courier (customer will be informed).
Goods will be WELL PACKAGED by Unwins Books
and dispatched once payment has cleared.
