Isenokuni

Kuwana clan bill

12 Mon

( -1867)

FRONT

・銭拾弐文預(12 Mon)

・以此札八枚換当百一銭(8 sheets * this bill can be exchanged for 100 Mon * 1 pcs)

BACK

・銭拾弐文預(12 Mon)

・A picture of a white rat climbing on an uchide-kozuchi (a small mallet) on the front. The uchide-kozuchi is the possession of Daikoku ten, the god of good fortune, and the white rat is said to be his messenger, so this picture is a good omen for Daikoku.

・The bottom edge of this bill is printed as a method of exchanging bills: "8 sheets * this bill can be exchanged for 100 Mon", indicating that 8 sheets * this bill can be exchanged for 1 pcs * Tempo-tsuho. However, 8 sheets * this clan bill worth 12 Mon would only amount to 96 Mon.

・In fact, this difference is due to a method of distribution known as the shohyaku-method, in which 96 pieces of coins (96 Mon) were put together with 1 pcs * Sashi (a bundle of coins), etc., and each piece was considered to be worth 100 Mon. Excavations of medieval stockpiles of coins, in which large numbers of copper coins were buried, often show that 96 or 97 coins were counted as 1 pcs * Sashi. The shohaku method is considered to be an traditional Japanese trading practice (or calculation method).
