Sally R. Garcia, "Gah-Wee-Nah-Zah" (Running Brook), is a full-blood Navajo Indian. Born in 1940 into the Laguna Pueblo, Sally was inspired to continue a long family tradition of making pottery, and strongly believes in keeping that tradition alive. She began the unique craft of carving on pottery at the age of 19, and is credited as being a pioneer in the practice. Her inspired designs include images of animals, Mudheads (clowns), flowers, and Mimbres (an ancient native culture in the Southwest). Much of Sally's etchings are stories of nature which she derives from her native surroundings and the Navajo culture. She accomplishes her intricate designs using simple, hand-held carving tools, and uses no stencils; everything is completely freehand: images taken from the pictures that pass through her heart and into her mind. This particular pot measures 11" wide x 5" tall to the top of the 1 1/2" hole in the middle. See photos. It is a beautiful piece and will complement any collection of hand-made Navajo art. A truly stunning work, created by a full-blood, inspired and highly-skilled native artist.
