Men's High Grade 23 Jewel Lord Elgin Solid 14k Gold Watch w/ Box - SERVICED!

Elgin Watch Company was a grand endeavor from the moment it was conceived in 1864. Smoke from the Civil War had not yet cleared and businessmen were already being lured from Massachusetts’ Waltham Watch Company to organize and build a monumental watch factory in Elgin, Ill. By 1865 the company was organized and capitalized with half a million dollars, and unimaginable post-war sum. The company's leaders thrust themselves into the industrial revolution and were, in a few short years, running the biggest pocket watch company in the world. By the middle of the Twentieth Century they also dominated the wristwatch world, producing, among other popular models the "Lord and Lady Elgin" series distinguished by high-grade movements and progressive case designs.

It's Postwar '60s and every American G.I. wanted to shed his fatigues and don something a bit more "stateside." Watch manufacturers such as Elgin, Waltham, Bulova and Hamilton, who had set aside civilian sales to pitch in for the war effort, were now poised to satisfy the demands of their returning customers. It was time for a special watch – and Elgin was up to the task, introducing the 23 ruby jewel "Lord Elgin" 724 movement with Durapower mainspring in a solid gold case. Exuding class and sophistication, it was just the reward the public wanted to give and receive. These models were the best watches of their day, having benefitted by years of war research and development and engineers honing their collective skills. Pricey but worth it, the Lord Elgin was a horological triumph.

This gorgeous, completely original example measuring approx.  41mm lug-to-lug and 35mm in diameter comes in what we believe to be its original ruby Lucite presentation case.  It is a stunning, mesmeric thing in solid 14k yellow gold, fine enough to be worn to a State dinner, yet still handsome with a polo shirt and khakis. Remarkable as it may seem, this watch is 60 years old and still as sharp and sexy as it was in the early Sixties. It's what the well-heeled, tasteful client seeks: something vintage, something crisp and distinctive, something that will turn heads in the boardroom and the country club.

Marked "Lord Elgin" with the Durapower logo, this pearlescent dial sports slim bar markers as well as spear hour and minute hands and a matching center sweep second hand. The case is beautifully Minimalist and distinctive, sporting an “Elgin” marked strap and buckle. Open the smooth, unengraved back and you'll find the pride of the Elgin factory: a completely cleaned, oiled and calibrated 23 ruby-jeweled, manual-wind 724 movement – forever free from the need of batteries.

Please take a moment to admire the images of this work of wrist art, resplendent in an original ruby Lucite Lord Elgin "Durapower" presentation case, as it is a most sophisticated vintage timepiece!

We love our overseas buyers, but if the watch is purchased outside the U.S., we must replace the strap with a leather one.
