Found at a small estate auction here in midcoast Maine and apparently coming from an Islesboro ME summer house.

A William Brymner (1855-1925) oil on panel painting of an outdoor scene in Saint-Eustache which is a locale just outside of Montreal Quebec.

Artist William Brymner is a legendary figure in Canadian art both for his work as an artist and for his role as an educator & mentor of young students & artists.

This painting  measures about 5.25" x 7" while its frame measures about 12" x 13".

This  painting is not signed but does have the Wm. Brymner authentication on the Watson Art Galleries  stamp verso. Watson's memorial exhibition & sale was held 11/20/1925 -12/4/1925 at the Watson Galleries in Montreal shortly after Brymner's death.

It is circa 1913 and perhaps a study painting for his very well known painting titled  "Afterglow" which was completed in 1913. A side by side comparison of this painting and "Afterglow" makes  one think that their subject location is the same.

Used estate condition: As any antique painting, it is fragile and will need careful handling. A professional cleaning, depending on one's taste, may be warranted. The gessoe frame shows some age crackling; the textile liner between the frame and the painting is slightly soiled and the its backside shows two cracks in the cardboard support.

Overall a very pleasing and effective painting by an important figure in Canadian art.
