 ** RARELY AVAILABLE **

This is a beautiful and rare piece made by Thomas Rose at Coalport around the year 1810, during the Georgian / Regency period. The Bowl is made of early white bone china with the iconic "Crab Claw" Imari pattern in iron red, cobalt blue and gilding.

Coalport was one of the pioneers of English china production and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. There were two brothers: John and Thomas Rose, each setting up their own pottery in Coalbrookdale at opposite sides of the Coalport canal in the 1790s. This is a beautiful example of some of the decorative and often quite modern-looking designs their factories made.

Ultimately they merged and it was the elder brother John who became famous with his Coalport pottery. while Thomas ended up working for other potters. Thomas, who almost certainly designed this pattern, had his own distinct style and was an early adopter of the Japanese Imari style, which can be recognised in this colourful piece.

The Bowl is decorated in poly-chrome enamel in the Imari palette and style. There are six equal sized panels. Three have an under glaze blue ground with a central iron red chrysanthemum flower. The three other panels each have the same design of three under glaze blue leaves and three iron red flowers and green leaves all with copious gilding.

It is unmarked, which is common for items of that period, but the pattern number 561 is visible, hand painted in gold on the bottom of the bowl
