About the Artist:
Robert Graham Dryden Alexander (1875-1945) was a painter, born in Brentwood, Essex. He studied at the British Museum, the Hornsey School of Art, and later like his daughter Jean Alexander (1911-1994) at the Slade School of Art. The majority of his views are of Essex subjects, since he lived in Brentwood and often stayed at Walton-on-the-Naze. A close friend of Sir George Clausen and Mark Fisher, he was a regular exhibitor at the NEAC and the RA. In 1922 he shared an exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery with A. S. Hartrick. His work is represented at the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Ashmolean. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Anthony Fortescue Galleries, London in 1975.
