VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a large size vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “The World of Mary Ellen Best,” by Caroline Davidson, with a Foreword by Howard Rutkowski and illustrated with nearly 140 COLOUR pictures, including a FULL-PAGE COLOUR frontispiece self-portrait of Mary Ellen Best in 1839 and 3 maps.

It was published by Chatto & Windus/The Hogarth Press, of London, and is the 1985 (date of copyright) FIRST EDITION.

Caroline Davidson tracked down hundreds of English artist, Mary Ellen Best (1809–1891) paintings and uncovers the fascinating story of her life.

Mary Ellen Best was most active as an artist in the 1830s, usually working in water-colour, commonly painting scenes of domestic life.  Unlike most of the artists of her time, she was much more interested in painting the lives of women than of men.

Born in York, England, she was a discerning traveller, undertaking three continental tours before she marrying Johan Anton and moving to Germany, where she continued to paint the houses they lived in.

Her paintings of domestic life, including families at tables, kitchens, and domestic workers. She painted a number of water-colour images of her home in Castle Gate, York, including interior portraits of the drawing room, dining room (painted in 1838), and one of herself working in her painting room (depicted on the front of the dust-jacket). She also painted other houses including the drawing room of Naburn Hall, which was then home to George Palmes.

The book measures 11 inches x 9 inches and has 160 pages (including illustrations).

The book is in good, bright, clean and neat condition for its age, with fading to the spine of the otherwise very good original dust-jacket (not even price-clipped). There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages.

A wonderfully illustrated vintage FIRST EDITION.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
