This is a promotional advertising giveaway inkwell from Hoyt’s Broadway play “A Stranger, in New York” at Hoyt’s theater in New York from 1897. The inkwell is a little dog from the play and his prop with the words “ He’s Caught On” on the lid. The inkwell measures 3.24” in height x 2.5” wide and deep. Most of the green enamel paint is still intact with some light wear. The hinge pin is missing. There are no breaks in the hinge so it can be easily repaired with a new pin or some wire. Fairly elaborate casting including a detailed base with 4 dolphins.

The last photo is from a poster advertising the play or possibly sheet music from the play, which is NOT INCLUDED. The play ran at Hoyt’s theater in New York City from September to November 1897 for a total of 64 performances. Written by Charles H Hoyt. He died young at age 40 in 1900. There is some interesting info about him on Wikipedia, including a stay in an insane asylum shortly before his death. He had a fairly prolific professional, if short, career as a playwrite in the late 1800s.
