Lionel Trains No. 2457 Caboose - Pennsylvania 477618

Variation E (see below): RED body and smokestack that has BLACK window frames, but does not have the "EASTERN DIV" inscription below the number on the sides.

The N5 Pennsylvania Caboose No. 2457 was issued in O gauge sets from 1945 until 1947 and it was a deluxe version of the No. 2472 that was issued with Lionel’s O27 sets.

This caboose was of all sheet-metel construction that is mounted on a BLACK chassis that has steps. This caboose came with a smokestack, end hand rails, brake stands, ladders, tool box and a plastic air pump on the underside of the chassis. All versions had staple-end trucks with one or two electronic coil couplers, and interior illumination. Most of the variations have forward and backward cupola windows and "EASTERN DIV" below the number "477618" on the sides.

Note that the number "477618" is printed on the side of this caboose while the actual production number "2457" is rubber-stamped on the bottom of the chassis. There are six variations:

Variation A: BROWN body and smokestack, off center lettering, and RED window frames. Early 1945 issue that was most likely a 1941 or 1942 construction updated with post war trucks to meet the demand of 1945.
Variation B: Same as Variation A except with centered lettering.
Variation C: RED body and smokestack that has RED window frames.
Variation D: RED body and smokestack that has BLACK window frames.
Variation E: RED body and smokestack that has BLACK window frames, but does not have the "EASTERN DIV" inscription below the number on the sides.
Variation F: Same as Variation E, except with a BLACK smokestack.
