Great rare antique Meriden silverplate triangular napkin holder with crossed military sabers and Maple Leaf. This piece is almost certainly from a Canadian Army Officer’s Mess Regimental Silver service and I believe it dates to the late Victorian or Edwardian time frame. The engraved verbiage and maple leaf imagery on the holder is a direct reference to the song “The Maple Leaf Forever” written by Alexander Muir in 1867 to celebrate the year of Canada’s Confederation. The holder is most likely associated with The Royal Westminster Regiment (active 1910-present) as the song “The Maple Leaf Forever” is the authorized regimental march of “The Westies”. It could also be associated with The Queen’s Own Rifles of Toronto (active 1860-present) as Muir served with that unit just prior to penning the song. Good vintage condition with overall surface wear and tarnish as well as wear and bending to saber handles and tips. See photos. A very nice piece of Canadian military history. Militaria. Measures 1 5/8”x 2 1/2”x 2”.
