Sourced from a professional post-production environment, the RAID stayed in a single immaculately clean, climate-controlled edit suite for its entire operational lifespan. Thanks to this and the careful maintenance by a seasoned engineer, the unit remains in impeccable cosmetic condition.
Originally acquired for editing and grading a 3-camera feature film in a 100% RED raw codec pipeline, the unit was initially paired with a 5k Intel iMac. Later, it was upgraded to an M1 Mac Studio. The LaCie 12big primarily handled commercial color grading projects via DaVinci Resolve. Equipped with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, a hardware RAID 6 configuration, and ample storage capacity, it proved exceptionally reliable.
Recently, one of the 12 drives developed a read/write error when nearing 90% capacity. To safeguard projects, it was promptly taken offline, and a larger new RAID was purchased. Data from the LaCie 12big was archived and securely erased to protect client assets. After undergoing rigorous 3-pass certification and testing, during which three drives were replaced and firmware was upgraded, it is now fully functional with no issues.
The system was then configured with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in RAID 5 to suit most users. Windows OS users can easily reformat to any file system or RAID configuration post-purchase. Complete documentation, OS updaters, and firmware are included. Blackmagic Disk Speed tests consistently show speeds above 5000 MB/s in the newly configured system.
These tests were performed in RAID 5 on the completely rebuilt system and the fastest ever reported on this unit. Different RAID configurations, disk storage and fragmentation will always report slower speeds than this. Please refer to readily available online documentation for manufacturers endorsed speed. There is no guarantee you will achieve these speeds, but the screenshots were actual tests from this unit.
Exclusive to hardware enclosures, the RAID 6 configuration allows for two drive failures, a critical feature for maintaining productivity in a professional post-production workflow.
