Mr and Mrs Quack Thornton Burgess Mallard Ducks Pairpoint Glass Cup Plate 65
Collectible Cape Cod Harrison Cady Art Glass Vintage Nursery Decoration
Handcrafted on Cape Cod, Made in USA
This charming crystal vintage Pairpoint Glass cup plate depicts the beloved mallard ducks, Mr. and Mrs. Quack, at the edge of a pond. The Thornton Burgess Society chose these characters because they were in constant residence on the grounds of the Burgess Museum and Green Briar Nature Center on Cape Cod. The Quacks were featured in "The Adventures of Poor Mrs. Quack" in 1917 after Thornton Burgess was asked to help in the plight of the Mallard duck. The pressing for plate number 65 began in 1979 and ended in 1981, with 12,340 plates pressed. This whimsical cup plate makes a thoughtful baby shower gift when paired with a classic Thornton Burgess book. Burgess was the creator of Peter Rabbit and his animal friends in the Dear Old Briar Patch, the Smiling Pool, the Green Meadow, and the Laughing Brook. The Thornton Burgess Society, which ran the former Burgess museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, sold cup plates bearing the imprint of the characters to help fund the museum. The last photo is for size illustration only.
Vintage Pairpoint Glass lead crystal cup plates are works of art that feature intricate designs and decorative elements not commonly found on modern glass. They can add a touch of elegance to a collection or home decor. The 3.5 inch cup plates were handcrafted on Cape Cod using traditional techniques. The artisan created a steel mold with hammer and chisel for each intricate design, and then hand-pressed molten glass into the engraved mold using an antique press. This hand process created a series of cup plates that are similar, but not identical. The irregularities highlight the handmade nature of each piece. Each cup plate has the artisan's initials and the Pairpoint trademark embedded within the design. The cup plate can be used as a small catchall dish to keep track of small trinkets such as keys or jewelry, or as a ring dish to keep all your small, special things safe.
