"J. F. Shew"
Camera.

This side strut camera is missing its' makers plaque, but I believe it was made by "J. F. Shew" and it is in "as found" condition.
This camera is one of the lesser known view camera styles and has a "side-strut" body pattern. Shew cameras are the embodiment of this design.
There are no holes or splits to the black leather bellows, however, there is a little loss of colour to the corners and folds.
The ground glass screen to the back is missing and there is a double dark slide in its' place.
The aperture measures 6 1/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches.
One of the tabs to the top of the double dark slide has a crack and is loose.
The wood has gained a nice depth of colour and patina that only comes with age and years of use, however, it does have the scuffs, marks and scratches you would expect from an item of this age.
The alloy fittings have retained a good finish.
The camera extends smoothly and all of the catches and hinges work well. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.
It is fitted with a Shew & Co. "Patent" shutter and this appears to be working.
The lens is marked "Ross, London 7 In Goerz Patent, No. 4244" lens, there are no scratches or cracks to the glass elements, that I can find and the helical extension works, but it is a little stiff, when the lever is moved.
There has been a brass lever mechanism added to the lens board.
The doors open and close well and are held closed with a brass catch.

The makers plaque has been removed and a removable viewfinder has been placed over where it would have been.
