THE TEMPTATIONS ALBUMS -

The Temptations Gettin' Ready 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION MUSIC ON VINYL Import LP

180g Audiophile Vinyl! Includes Two Bonus Tracks!

Gettin' Ready (1966) by The Temptations marked the transition of the group from having Smokey Robinson as its main producer, with new producer Norman Whitfield taking over Robinson's position. On the instrumentation you'll hear the marvelous Funk Brothers, with their defining Motown sound.

Two #1 R&B hit singles, one from each producer, are included: "Get Ready" from Robinson with Eddie Kendricks on lead, and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" from Whitfield with David Ruffin on lead. Also included is the original version of "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", which would be rerecorded as a hit for Marvin Gaye in 1969.

The Music On Vinyl edition contains two bonus tracks on Side Two: "Give It Up" & "The Man Who Don't Believe In Love", a track originally penned by Marv Johnson.

"The marvelous title track alone, with Eddie Kendricks gliding into the stratosphere, made this an instant winner." -Ron Wynn, allmusic.com

SOLID ROCK - Solid Rock occupies an odd place in my brain; I was four years old when my mom bought it and it's the first album I ever remember listening to. She must have only played it for a few months, but it lodged itself firmly in my cerebral cortex, particularly the trippy "Stop the War." I don't think I ever stopped thinking about this album since and at various times tried to track down copies. I guess a cd was briefly available but I was never able to find one. I ended up finding a pristine LP, at a ridiculous price (like 75 dollars) and made a rip of it.

It's amazing to me that the album sounded exactly like my memory of it, even though I hadn't heard it in 35 years. Like a lot of the motown albums of that era, it almost feels more like a Norman Whitfield (the producer) solo album than a temps album. It was the height of his psychedelic soul era and honestly, it's terrific. The standout tracks are "Stop the War" which has a beat and tempo that could be charted as a bell curve--it's gradually builds and gradually fades and is as good as Papa is a Rolling Stone; as well as Superstar (the retort to Eddie Kendricks, who had just left the group), and "Take a Look Around" which is an appeal against the destruction brought by drugs to the inner city.

This is a beautiful album that is basically impossible to find. If you track it down, cherish it; you own a treasure.

PUZZLE PEOPLE - This is The Temptations first 1970's album. This album is very funky and contains some of their best harmonies. It includes such hits as "I Can't Get Next To You", "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down" and "Message From A Black Man". Time was running out for member Paul Williams at this point as he was battling alcohol abuse. He does some of his best singing on this album. He quit touring with the band shortly after the release of this album. This unfortunately is another Hard-to find LP. If you get your hands on it  it's well worth the buy.

Track Listings

1. I Can't Get Next to You
2. Hey Jude
3. Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down
4. Message from a Black Man
5. It's Your Thing
6. Little Green Apples
7. You Don't Love Me No More
8. Since I've Lost You
9. Running Away (Ain't Gonna Help You)
10. That's the Way Love Is
11. Slave

ALL DIRECTIONS - In 1972 the Temptation released their second studio album of the year and was the first time since 1969 that they did that with the releases of Cloud Nine and Puzzle People respectively. The first single off the album "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" was the big hit and won the group two Grammys the follwing year. This was one of those extended jams Whifield was known for but not people other than the Tempts complained, even the radio version was about 7 minutes long. But my absolute favorite song on this album has got to be "Mother Nature" which is wonderfully sung by lead singer Dennis Edwards. Otis Williams also gets a rare lead with "I Ain't Got Nothing" and Damon Harris and Richard Street does remarkable jobs with covers of "Love Woke Me Up This Morning","First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", and "Do Your Thing". Worth it for "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and "Mother Nature" alone, but again very hard to find and out of print. Another classic album by the Temptations, although you could see that things were about to change.

Track Listings

1. Funky Music Sho' Nuff Turns Me On
2. Run Charlie Run
3. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone
4. Love Woke Me up This Morning
5. I Ain't Got Nothing
6. First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
7. Mother Nature
8. Do Your Thing

MASTERPIECE - With a trend started with "Smiling Faces (Sometimes)" and continued through "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", for a while a Temps album featured the LONG cut, a song that gave the group room to show their musicality while the band was allowed to "jam", too.

The former two selections, from "Sky's the Limit" and "All Directions", respectively, as well as the title cut from this release were excellent forerunners to extended remixes to come in the disco era 70's. For a musicologist, this makes all three a worthwhile acquisition.

Tracks include: 1. Hey Girl (I Like Your Style) 2. Masterpiece 3. Ma 4. Law Of The Land 5. Plastic Man 6. Hurry Tomorrow

PSYCHEDELIC SHACK

Released in 1970 the Temptations and Norman Whitfield were in full pyschedelic mode through out this whole album. This album is why I became a huge Norman Whitfield fan. Some members were getting uncomfortable singing all the pychedelic songs...but personally I prefer this version of the Tempts over all others (with the David Ruffin led Tempts in a very close second). See with me I love the Whitfield produced Tempts because you didn't have to skip any song unlike the 60's Gordy assembly line albums they and other Motown artist were putting out. This album flows from song to song without ever missing a beat. Bassist James Jamerson and the Funk Brothers were hitting on all cylinders with the great funk that was being laid down in the studio. My favorite songs are the title track and the haunting "Take A Stroll Through Your Mind", with the latter having great vocal interplay between the group. Even though I wasn't born when this album came out " know it had to be the shiizniit on the streets. Overall a must have album but again a very hard to find LP.

Track Listings

1. Psychedelic Shack
2. You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth
3. Hum Along and Dance
4. Take a Stroll Through Your Mind
5. It's Summer
6. War
7. You Need Love Like I Do (Don't You?)
8. Friendship Train

CLOUD NINE

When this album was originally released in early '69, it was a gamble. Could the Temptations, known as smooth melodic crooners of love songs, successfully reinvent themselves as contemporaries of Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, and the Chambers Brothers, with their psychedelic rock and soul sounds? The answer was YES. CLOUD NINE, this masterpiece by produced by Norman Whitfield, the most soulful producer to ever come out of Motown, is one of my favorite LPs by the Temptations. The grittiness of "Cloud Nine", the title song and the album opener (and the first single from the album, released in late 1968) demands that you pay attention to what the Tempts are saying. Songwriter Barrett Strong's words come to life as newest Temptation Dennis Edwards tells the story of growing up poor in the inner city...and the debate about this song continues to this day. Was the song about getting high, or just changing your way of thinking? A funky rendition of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" takes Gladys Knight and the Pips' version, strips it down to the rhythm track, and emphasizes the Tempts' harmonies above everything else. I LOVE the scatting on this track!! The nine minute and thirty-eight second version of "Runaway Child, Running Wild" is worth the price of the LP alone. Simply relentless, with the sound of a child crying for his mother. What was really great about this LP was the use of multiple vocalists singing different parts at the same time on each song. Prior to this LP, you'd basically have David Ruffin, or sometimes Eddie Kendricks singing the lead and the rest of the guys singing "Oooh, waaa" or "Oh baby" in the background. However on these three cuts on CLOUD NINE you might hear Dennis, then Eddie, then Paul, the Melvin, then Otis...all on the same song! I just love it.

The second part of the LP, to me, seemed to let Temptations' fans know that they could still sing the love ballads in the way that made them famous, even though David Ruffin was no longer in the group by then. There are some very nice remakes on it ("Love Is A Hurtin' Thing", "Hey Girl") plus some beautiful original tunes ("I Need Your Lovin'" with Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals, "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", a Paul Williams standout lead, "Why Did She Have To Leave Me" and others). A daring bit of work that forever changed Motown, and a definite part of their history, since "Cloud Nine" was the very first Motown tune ever to win a Grammy. Get it, and you too will be on CLOUD NINE!
